About

elena_paint_parrotI discovered my artistic talent as a young child in Cuba, where I was born and lived until the age of 10. Visualizing images that I saw or could imagine came easily to me. What I did not realize then was that the creative process was to be my life’s greatest passion.

While studying to be a chiropractor, I took a drawing class as a much-needed break from the sciences. It was then that I reconnected with my creativity and chose to follow my passion for art. I earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Florida Atlantic University.

I love to capture my emotions through the use of colors, lines and movement in my paintings. As I incorporate more personal expression in my work, I love the spontaneity and discoveries it brings to my creative process. The ongoing dialog I have with my artwork makes the boundaries of self disappear. At times I feel so in tune with the work that it seems to create itself and I cease to exist — the artwork is all there is. The desire for this experience is what drives me to create and put into action my knowledge, skills, and ideas. In the end, the artwork evolves and speaks for itself and represents my personal and technical evolution as an artist. When the viewer can relate to the overall feeling of the artwork and begin a new dialog with the painting, I feel that my work is a success.

Painting has not always been personal for me; my career began with commissions to paint realistic murals of nature and aquatic life. I also work in ceramics and enjoy the endless sculptural and functional possibilities that I can uncover in a lump of clay.
